Yes, unfortunately for me (and the world at large!!!) my art submission wasn't accepted at the Sidney Art Show jury. I guess it isn't the right venue for it. A fellow artist I know, Kathy Cameron, had her submission accepted (Yay!!) so it's not all bad!!! I will continue on my journey of art making, I love making the shadow boxes and will continue exploring that medium. I'm also considering mural making, so if you have any feedback or ideas, I'd love to hear from you!

I've been taking a bit of a break since then and tidying up, after the tornado of paper I trailed from room to room!! The weather is changing and re-evaluation is in the air. I find the "new year" starts in September for me, even though I've been out of school and out of the parent-of-a-school-girl phase for a long time - old habits die hard! I've really been drawn to fashion lately, I've gone to the library to borrow fashion magazines, looking for inspiration and images for my artwork. I love my printer/photocopier! I don't know if anyone of you remembers when the first colour copiers came into being, but I remember having a colour copy done at the library, of all places, for my first experience! It was weird, too, compared to today - more like an odd, shiny mimeograph (anyone remember those at school for the teachers to copy material for class?). I was asked why I have taken so long to put my ideas into this format of a shadowbox, and a great deal of it has to do with technology. I now have a digital camera that can take great macro images, I have the computer to immediately see my photographed images, I can alter them until I get it right, and print as many copies as I need to get the right size - a lot of control that I could never get easily from the neighbourhood copy centre.

Has new technology influenced your ability to create art in new ways?

I took my shadow box to the jury process, today. It's those last minute things that need extra attention that I hadn't really considered that make the final day a bit of a blur - touching up the paint on the frame, fastening a back onto the box, wiring it to hang up........ The jury volunteers decided it is in the 3D category, though I thought because it hangs on the wall it would be "artwork under glass". My lovely sis-in-law is picking it up from the jury process, on Wednesday for me. I won't know for a couple of weeks whether it and my painting, "The Watcher", have been accepted for the show in October. Here's a couple of pictures of it finished and also framed.

I made the image more complex. I also took out the orange coloured rose in the lower left. It's hard to tell, but the red rose is layered with paper petals and the girls are now hand drawn versions.

With the shadow box in its frame, the lighting is a bit different in this photo so you may see different detail than the previous picture of it.
